What is a Wedge Pillow?

A wedge pillow is a pillow designed in the shape of a firm wedge. Wedge pillows can be used in a variety of applications, and they can be very useful to keep around the house and office. Home supply stores often stock wedge pillows, as do stores which carry bedding, and establishments which stock ergonomic and therapeutic items. Some athletic suppliers also carry specialized wedge pillows which are designed to provide support for activities like stretching and yoga.

A typical wedge pillow is made from a covered foam block. The block is cut in a precise wedge shape, and it will retain its shape for an extended period of time, unlike filled and stuffed pillows, which tend to become deformed over time. It is also possible to find wedge pillows which have been made by building up strips of foam into a wedge shape. In both cases, the pillow is covered to prevent the foam from getting dirty or becoming damaged, and people may use a pillow case with the pillow for hygienic reasons.

The size of the pillow and angle of the wedge can vary considerably, depending on the use for which the pillow is intended. Wedge pillows are classically used to provide support, with the wedge creating a firm, supportive surface which people can use to get comfortable. A wedge pillow may be placed against the headboard for support while reading, for example, and a pregnant woman may use a wedge pillow to support her body while she sleeps in the later stages of pregnancy.

Smaller wedge pillows can be installed on office chairs and in car seats to promote good posture and create a comfortable seat. Short people in particular are prone to bad posture when they use office chairs or drive, because offices and cars are designed for slightly taller people. Using a wedge pillow can elevate a short person to the right height, promoting greater comfort, and in the case of cars, greater safety.

People can also use wedge pillows for stretching and other physical activities, with the wedge providing support so that the body does not become strained. Especially when people are experimenting with new stretching positions or athletic routines, a wedge pillow can be a good idea, as it supports the body while it becomes accustomed to the new technique. A big wedge pillow can also be used as a backrest for someone who wants to sit and read or work on a floor, and many people come up with other creative uses for their wedge pillows.
