What are Decorative Pillows?

By Bethany Keene
Updated: May 23, 2024

Decorative pillows are pillows that are used to improve the visual appeal of a room or a piece of furniture. They may also be referred to as accent pillows or throw pillows. You might also use decorative pillows as couch pillows.

Decorative pillows come in many different shapes and sizes. There are some larger throw pillows, also sometimes called floor pillows, that are approximately two feet (60 cm) wide. These have a denser cushion and are used to sit on the floor, such as to watch television or to eat at a coffee table. Smaller accent pillows could be square, round, or rectangular, and might be placed on a sofa, loveseat, chair, window seat, or anywhere you want to create a cozy space.

Purchasing decorative pillows of different shapes and sizes adds visual interest to a room. These accent pillows also come in many different fabrics, colors, and patterns. Some of these fabrics might be suede, denim, cotton or even faux fur, though there are endless possibilities available. The pillows might feature a pattern or an imprinted image, or there might be extra embellishments such as sequins, beads, tassels or embroidery, among others.

If you like to sew, you can make your own decorative pillows. Compared to many other projects, they are a relatively easy way to start learning to sew. You can then give your handmade creations out as gifts.

Because decorative pillows are relatively inexpensive, they are a great way to update the look of a room without spending your whole budget. Using decorative pillows to add a bright spot of color or to soften up a room that seems cold is an easy way to add more personality to your home. Rather than getting brightly colored pieces of furniture or loud paintings, bright pillows in pretty patterns are simple and stylish.

Best of all, decorative pillows can easily be swapped out if your tastes change. You could purchase all new pillows, or you could simply re-cover the ones you already own. Some people switch out their decorative pillows seasonally, which is a nice way to give your home a new, fresh feeling in the spring or a more warm, cozy feeling in the winter.

If you want to make your home appear warm and inviting, accent pillows are just one way to do it. You might also place candles around your home along with other personal touches such as family photos. Choosing oversized, overstuffed furniture will also give your home a very comfortable, welcoming feel.
